St. Germain and Selby
Born at Auxerre, France, the story of St Germain, the Patron Saint of the Abbey, is entwined with that of the Abbey.
Legend has it that the Abbey’s founder, Benedict of Auxerre, had a vision in which St Germain appeared to him, calling him to build a new monastery at Selby, thus setting in train a story of many journeys to Selby.
Scenes from St Germain’s life are shown in the Abbey’s stained-glass window in the North Transept.
