Leah’s Selby Connection
Struggling with her disability growing up but finding freedom in learning about internalised ableism.
Leah’s Selby Story
I was registered blind at the age of 11, although many people don’t realise this as I am a very independent person!
Throughout my life I have been treated differently and growing up I never understood why and struggled to find where I fit.
At school I was given adaptations to use, but all they did was draw attention to my differences, and I struggled with this as I just wanted to fit in.
I recently came across the term “Internalised Ableism” and this was a changing point for me as I suddenly understood my thoughts and feelings, and realised that I wasn’t just weird, there was a reason behind the way I felt.
Living in an ableist society is a struggle, as society doesn’t cater for those with disabilities, especially hidden disabilities, but I will continue my fight with the belief that I can and will achieve!
