Jazmin Morris - Selby Light

Through the Liquid Crystal Display

Audio Description

As well as hosting Homeward, Selby Abbey will also feature artwork from Jazmin Morris, whose collection ‘Through the Liquid Crystal Display’ will appear on screens inside the building. Find out more about the artist, artwork and pieces on display below.

Through the Liquid Crystal Display

For this brand new work, Jazmin will present a series of visual code illustrations inspired by the architecture of Selby Abbey and the stories of vibrant local community members. Through this series, Jazmin positions creative coding as a contemporary approach to traditional stained glass techniques. The iconography of stained glass has been used for centuries to tell stories and document history. Here, the artist transforms this traditional approach, presenting a view into a new place of reflection.

Below you can discover, edit and expand ‘Through the Liquid Crystal Display’. Read more about the inspiration behind each of the works in the series and take a piece of the art ‘Homeward’ with you… Download the code-generated images and continue the journey home. These images are
designed to be used as screensavers for mobile, tablet or desktop.

“We now stare into our screens like we once stared out of the window. I hope these illustrations provide a moment of tranquillity amongst the digital chaos.”

If you are keen to investigate the process of this work, Jazmin has provided links to view and edit the code. Each piece was developed using p5.js, a free and open-source JavaScript library built by an inclusive, nurturing community. Take a peek if you are interested in seeing how a self-taught creative coder approaches a project like this. p5.js will automatically allow you to edit the code; worry not, this will not affect the original project. Play with colours, shapes and locations to put your own digital stamp on the work. Press the ‘S’ key in the code editor to save an image of the illustration to your device at any point.

In the spirit of p5.js, you are welcome to fork the code and create your own illustration. If you share your outcome publicly, please credit the artist ‘Through the Liquid Crystal Display, Jazmin Morris’.

Moon Phase

The moon is the ruler of the tide; it never rests even when it is not visible, and although it appears different each day, it always returns to wholeness. The moon and its many phases, resilience and presence are a metaphor for the community spirit of Selby.

Home is Where the Heart is

Whilst working with the residents of Selby, Jazmin noticed one common thread among the journeys; home was carried in the heart. Although Selby is the physical place they call home, and some had travelled far to get there, it was clear that the emotional journey of life had led everyone to carry a piece of themselves and a piece of their home in their heart.

LUDO

This graphic illustration is inspired by the famous family game LUDO. Not only is this game about the race home, but it also brings families and friends together and cannot be enjoyed alone, much like the journey of life. Sometimes you laugh, sometimes you fight, and sometimes you have to go back to where you started… But someone always makes it home to tell the story.
