Announcing ‘Otherham’ – ITD at Rotherham’s Winter Festival 2025

18th September 2024 by Lauren Randall

imitating the dog are heading to Rotherham – or should that be Otherham? – in January 2025 with an exciting and inventive new installation project.

Running from Friday 24th to Sunday 26th January, Rotherham Winter Festival is part of the borough’s yearlong celebration at becoming the world’s first Children’s Capital of Culture. We’re thrilled to be working alongside organisations Flux Rotherham and Grimm & Co to deliver a captivating trail of projection installations across the town centre’s buildings and present a reimagined vision of the town like never before.

Imagine a place… a place where nothing is quite as it seems; where the imaginations of young people have transformed the town, giving it an otherworldly twist. It’s a magical place where anything seems possible; where a stone wall might open portals to new worlds, where you can order the weather with your coffee, and where kindness is delivered by fluttering butterflies. It’s both familiar and fantastical, a reimagined Rotherham that invites you to see the town through a new lens. Welcome to Otherham

Chosen to feature by the Children’s Capital of Culture’s Youth Programming Panel, Otherham will see an array of buildings lit up by projections inspired by and drawn from the imaginations and creativity of young Rotherham residents who have participated in workshops hosted by Grimm & Co this autumn. These workshops encourage children and young people to reimagine the spaces around them and consider the possibilities available for storytelling. (For information on how to sign up for the remaining workshops, head over to our Otherham Workshops call-out.)

imitating the dog co-Artistic Director Simon Wainwright said: “We can’t wait to create Otherham for Rotherham’s Winter Festival. It’s a project we dreamed up after an inspirational visit to the town centre and Grimm & Co’s wonderful storytelling emporium; a visit which truly sparked our imaginations and formed the idea to let the city’s young people dream up a magical, unpredictable and out-of-step world. Who knows what we’ll end up creating but that’s the most exciting part – what stories could these buildings contain?”

‘Otherham’ Winter Festival project is a collaboration between Flux Rotherham, imitating the dog, Children’s Capital of Culture , RMBC Events, Grimm & Co and imitating the dog.
