Co-Artistic Director Andrew Quick writes here about the first block of making and rehearsals for Dracula: The Untold Story
‘We’ve just completed the main block of rehearsals for our new show, which will open in September at Leeds Playhouse, our co-production partner, and it’s been one rollercoaster of a ride.
Just like the rest of the country, our rehearsal process has been hit hard by the Covid-19 epidemic and all that it entails. We have not had any serious illness, so we’ve been very lucky, but a great deal of self-isolation, which has meant that there has not been a day where we have had everybody in the rehearsal space. Despite this, we have been creative and have built on our lockdown experiences to find ingenious ways to work when some of us are absent from the rehearsal space.
The show is really coming together, despite these challenges, and although our work has always been influenced by graphic novels this is the first time we have really grappled with the genre to create a theatricalised version of the form for the stage. It’s bright, brash and has a gripping story as we follow Mina’s Harker’s journey from her encounter with Dracula in 1895 to a police interview room in 1965. There are confessions, assassinations and, of course, plenty of blood. We will have one last push in September to complete the show. And we look forward to seeing you at one of the performances in the autumn.
Oh, and look out for some great trailers and digital snippets produced by our collaborators Sodium Films – they will be appearing on ITD’s social media very soon.’
