Power Plays Writing Festival 2024: Masterclass
imitating the dog Co-Artistic Director Andrew Quick is leading a masterclass on ‘The Art of Adaptation’ for the POWER PLAYS Writing Festival 2024, taking place at The Old Electric, Blackpool.
The POWER PLAYS Writing Festival is a vibrant line-up of events, talks, and shows designed to ignite creativity and inspire new perspectives. It aims to support new writing for the stage, explore original perspectives on the region, and establish The Old Electric as Blackpool’s home of new writing. With 48 exciting events all connected with new writing, the literary festival line-up will also include visiting artist Q&As, thrilling new live productions, a pioneering primary schools programme, peer to peer projects and keynote masterclass sessions.
Andrew will be sharing the processes and principles that guide our creative choices in adapting classic texts. Participants will have the chance to practically explore some of the questions and decisions necessary to adapt an existing narrative of their choice and develop an original treatment for the stage.

Other artists and writers involved include Krishna Isthna (Sex Education screenwriter and performance artist), multi-award-winning playwright Simon Stephens (Punk Rock, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time), theatre-maker and director Victoria Firth, local writer Lauren-Nicole Mayes and talented new writer-in-residence for The Old Electric, Martha Pailing.
The project is supported by Arts Council England and a host of regional and national partners and will run throughout April, May, June and July at The Old Electric. There will also be a playwriting competition launched in May as part of the festival, which will invite writers to submit scripts showcasing themes that have resonance to Blackpool to a panel of professional readers, building to a performance of the winning script in July 2024 and a tour of the production in 2025.
