Photos: Dear Joan at Light Up Lancaster

24th November 2025 by Lauren Randall

It’s hard to believe that it’s been just over a fortnight since we delivered our brand new video-mapping installation Dear Joan… at this year’s Light Up Lancaster. A huge thank you from all of us to those who came to Dalton Square to see the piece, which was accompanied by brilliant live performance from Gareth Cassidy (soon to be seen in our War of the Worlds tour), and to Lancaster for another fantastic festival experience.

Commissioned by Light Up Lancaster, Dear Joan… tells the story of an old man who is penning a letter when he gets an unexpected visitor – one that he can’t ignore. Inspired by C.S. Lewis, who penned over 10,000 letters in his lifetime, many of them to children, Dear Joan… combines magical projections and original soundscapes from James Hamilton to tell a charming story full of advice for writing and advice for life.

Get a feel for the piece in action courtesy of these snaps from festival photographer Robin Zahler.

It’s always a pleasure to showcase work in our city and be a part of Light Up Lancaster, but this year’s festival felt even more special than usual. It feels incredibly important right now for a community to come together and it was wonderful to see so many people from all walks of life enjoying and celebrating creativity, art and discovery.

A big thanks to all who made the event possible and special.
