Press Play on The Mixtape Project

1st April 2025 by Lauren Randall

The Mixtape Project playlist is online!

To coincide with the tour of All Blood Runs Red, this creative engagement endeavour saw us invite young participants and aspiring artists to create their own lyrical, musical and visual responses to our production, with the aim of drawing some of these pieces together in an online ‘mixtape’.

Under the guidance of spoken word artist, rapper & musician Testament and video artist Laura Spark, young wordsmiths, lyricists, beatmakers and content creators from Leeds, Salford, Lancaster & Doncaster explored their individual and collective reflections to All Blood Runs Red, creating original artistic responses set to music and video remixed from the show’s visual and sound designs.

Creative Engagement Manager, Ben Mellor said:

I’ve loved working on this project with Testament, Laura and all the many very talented young artists across the North! We had very different lengths of time available to us in different places – from two days in Leeds to about two hours everywhere else – which meant different approaches to creating original music and video material. But the depth, wisdom, and humour displayed in the lyrical content created by all of the participants, as well as the musical and visual literacy they demonstrated, has blown us all away! It’s been a fascinating and richly rewarding process to see how these developing artists have responded to the themes, music and video content of All Blood Runs Red, and I hope they enjoyed making the work as much as we enjoyed working with them to create it.

It was a privilege to see the participants collaborate and support each other’s work, showcasing new skills and developing existing ones, all while emphasising how storytelling encourages reciprocal creativity. We hope you enjoy the playlist as much as we do.

Check out the Mixtape over on our project page or via our Vimeo playlist or autoplay on the video below.

The Mixtape Project was supported by Arts Council England, the Nat Merriman Fund, Leeds Playhouse, Lowry, Lancaster Litfest & CAST.
