We are thrilled to announce that The City off the Map has received a special mention at the 29th Bienal Colombiana de Arquitectura y Ubanismo awards ceremony, held at the 26th of September in Cartagena, Colombia.
The digital video installation, which was a collaboration with and commission by The GREAT Project, Lancaster University and PopuLab, Universidad del Valle, invited viewers to take an imagined walk through the off-grid streets of Comuna 18 in Cali, Colombia. Combining model representations of the community’s houses with documentary footage and interviews from residents, it allowed people to ‘peer through the windows’ and discover more about life in a place not recognised by official maps or authorities. The GREAT Project (2020-2023) explores the relationship between people and urban infrastructure in areas of transition in Cali, Colombia and Havana, Cuba. This international three-year research project was supported by UKRI-Global Challenges Research Fund to develop a series of events for civilians and academics and was co-produced with local artists, communities and researchers to showcase findings.
The City Off the Map, or La Ciudad Fuera del Mapa, was selected as a finalist in the Dissemination Category at the awards. Although it didn’t win the grand prize, it is a huge honour to have received a special mention for the piece and its place in the brilliant research work carried out by The GREAT Project and PopuLab, the latter of which was also nominated for their Habitat Upgrading project.
It’s been fantastic to be a part of this journey and to learn from and work with two teams committed to quality, impact and new, visual, dynamic ways of presenting research and discovery. It’s been a GREAT experience for imitating the dog.
