Light Up Lancaster returns this November, and we’ll be joining in with Another LEAP into the unknown, as one of our most popular video-mapping installations takes flight once again upon the heritage buildings of Lancaster.
Taking place Thursday 7th – Saturday 9th November, Light Up Lancaster invites audiences to explore a magical light-art trail throughout the city, discovering enchanting light-artworks and captivating installations in Lancaster’s streets and squares. This year’s theme is The Art of Science, which playfully explores how art and science can be ‘creative twins’, with this year’s artists reflecting on how science can produce art, how art can shape science and sometimes how it can be difficult to tell the two apart.
Back by popular demand, and playfully retitled, Another LEAP will this year be appearing at the Judges Lodgings. In a series of phone calls across landscape and time, LEAP takes a joyful look at human communication and the science of the impossible. Set against the backdrop of the first moon landing in 1969, a story unfolds through stunning projection mapping, a lush soundscape and live singing from Jenny Chamberlain Smith. Join us for a journey across the sky, into the dark, into the night and into the future.
We’re excited for the piece to join a bold and brilliant programme of artists, national and international, and explore their works in a myriad of city spaces. The programme in full will be announced shortly, so keep an eye on Light Up Lancaster’s website and social media channels for more information.
All the artworks and installations are free to view and suitable for families, open from 5pm to 10pm each of the festival nights. There will also be a food market, curated by Food Futures, and two British Sign Language interpreted tours of the artworks on the Saturday evening (5pm and 7.30pm), led by specialist facilitator Martin Glover. Please email hello@lightuplancaster.co.uk for more information about these tours.
This year’s festival also includes, brand new for 2024, EXPLORE WEEK, taking place October 21st – 25th (half term), which offers five days of free workshops and hands-on activities about light, art and science, at The Storey building, coordinated with the Engagement team at Lancaster University, with support from the University’s Impact Acceleration Account funding programme.
We’re excited to be helping to organise this year’s festival, alongside Lancaster BID, The Dukes and Mirador and Lancaster University with support from Lancaster City Council.
Looking forward to seeing you there.
