FROM THE ARCHIVES: LUMIERE & SON, The Appeal

Lumiere and Son were one of the most significant companies to emerge from the British  Independent Theatre scene in the early 70s. Led by Hilary Westlake and David Gale, the work was surreal, ironic, intellectual and very funny. They were unusual at that time in placing as much emphasis on the quality of the writing as on the visual, and we will be looking at this company in depth in a later issue. This made for TV short, more or less typifies the sense of ironic, elegant and 0articulate threat that characterised their stage work.

INTERVIEW: Andrew Quick and Tim Etchells 

We are very pleased to have had the opportunity to interview Tim Etchells, in the context of To Move in Time, the one man show he is currently touring, with Tyrone Huggins. Tyrone was a founder member of 1980s company Impact Theatre Coop, while Tim is a founder member and writer with the seminal performance company Forced Entertainment. These two companies shared many concerns as Impact’s life ended and Forced Entertainment’s began in the mid 1980s, so it’s interesting so see Tim reflecting on this collaboration 30 odd years later.

Stan’s Cafe are one of Britain’s most unpredictable Performance company, and this typically idiosyncratic Video sees Mark Crossley, the author of ‘Devising Theatre with Stan’s Cafe’ interrogating Director James Yarker against a montage of images from the company’s previous work. Mark Crossley’s new book Intermedial Theatre is published by Red Globe Press on June 9th.

imitating the dog is currently touring Its adaptation of Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness. Our previous show Nocturnes is still in repertoire and that is the excuse we are using to justify putting up here the ‘process documentary’ we made at Keswick’s Theatre by the Lake in collaboration with media company Sodium.
