imitating the dog: Directing and Dramaturgy
Following the success of The Caretaker, imitating the dog returned to Chile in 2011 to work on King Lear at the Teatro de la Universidad Catolica, one of Santiago de Chile’s most important producing venues. Working again with Hugo Medina and La Luciernaga, the directorial/dramaturgical team of Brooks and Quick, with Laura Hopkins designing, produced a radical reworking of Shakespeare’s great play. Editing the play to a form inspired by Kurosawa’s Ran, the production dispensed with Edgar, and placed the aging king in a psychiatric hospital. Parallels with Chile’s recent history and in particular the internal quarrels of the Pinochet family made this a production with both a universal relevance, and also a specifically Chilean one.
