Rey Lear

Our Shows

imitating the dog: Directing and Dramaturgy

Following the success of The Caretaker, imitating the dog returned to Chile in 2011 to work on King Lear at the Teatro de la Universidad¬† Catolica, one of Santiago de Chile’s most important producing venues. Working again with Hugo Medina and La Luciernaga, the directorial/dramaturgical team of Brooks and Quick, with Laura Hopkins designing, produced a radical reworking of Shakespeare’s great play. Editing the play to a form inspired by Kurosawa’s Ran, the production dispensed with Edgar, and placed the aging king in a psychiatric hospital. Parallels with Chile’s recent history and in particular the internal quarrels of the Pinochet family made this a production with both a universal relevance, and also a specifically Chilean one.
